interference project #1 : bicycle
(in progress)
Coming from Texas, where there is the apparent requirement of a massive pickup truck to travel even short distances, i find one of the many charming aspects of New Orleans is the use of bicycles and feet and streetcars for transportation.
Despite my enchantment, this has created some difficulties with the style of photography i enjoy most - a rather severe documentation of local architectural structures. i capture in a stark and frontal fashion inspired by August Sander’s portraits and have preferred minimal human or mechanical interference in the austerity of the images. As with many aspects of my life, i have recently had to learn to chill out and become less rigid. i have had to learn to accept the interference of humans and mechanical devices that aren’t always aesthetically pleasing to my vision - utility wires, large black trash bins, parked cars, flags. Those things i am still working on embracing. But the interference of bicycles in my visual field, humans, and carriage ponies - these photobombs i have come to be delighted with when they happen.
These photographs are captured or transformed with a dreamy quality, reflecting my state when i am happily wandering the streets with a camera. Each is to be mounted on an 8” x 8” wood panel, which will be meticulously finished. There will be 12 - 20 pieces in the series.
